Periodontal Disease Prevention Tips
Ranked as one of the biggest threats to dental health, periodontal disease is a common set back for many patients. Affecting mostly adults, the Canadian Dental Association states that 7/10 Canadians will experience some form of periodontal disease in their lifetime. The Dental Room is here to help you understand the effects of it, and provide some helpful tips to make sure that you never have to worry!
What Is It?
Periodontal disease is the result of infection, and inflammation of the gums that support surrounding teeth. An early warning sign of this is called gingivitis. This is where your gums are inflamed and you may experience minor bleeding with slight contact. As plaque and bacteria build on your teeth, it will eventually harden and become what is known as tartar. This tough build up can eventually cover your gum line, and it makes it even harder to clean. This cycle repeats itself over time until it becomes a bigger issue.
In more serious cases called periodontitis, the patient will be at risk of receding gum lines that can eventually lead to a tooth becoming loose or falling out!
Warning Signs
Early warning signs of periodontal disease include bad breath, inflamed or bleeding gums, sensitive teeth, and a bad taste in your mouth that won’t go away. If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to call us as soon as you can. At The Dental Room, we can plan next steps to help keep your smile clean and safe!
How Can I Prevent It?
Brushing and flossing your teeth after every meal is the best way to ensure plaque doesn’t build up. You should aim to brush your teeth for two minutes, twice a day. Even with our best efforts, some plaque gets left behind, and hardens over time. This tough substance is called “tartar”, and can only be removed by a professional. This is why regular visits to your dentist for cleanings, and assessments are so important! By doing these steps, you’re setting yourself up for a smile that is clear of periodontal disease!
