WISDOM TOOTH EXTRACTION

At The Dental Room in Calgary, we perform both simple and complex wisdom teeth extractions. In the case of a severely impacted tooth, we may refer the patient to a trusted oral surgeon. The removal of wisdom teeth is best done during the late teens or early twenties to avoid unnecessary risks later on when the tooth roots have matured.

Common Complaints or Problems that Can Occur When Wisdom Teeth Emerge:

These teeth may become impacted when there is not enough room in the jaw to accommodate them (unable to break through the bone or gum tissue).

It is also possible for wisdom teeth to fracture during their eruption, which can cause gum tissue to partially cover them. There is a tendency for food and bacteria to become trapped between teeth and tissue, causing inflammation and discomfort.   It is not uncommon for wisdom teeth to come in at an angle, which makes chewing difficult and uncomfortable. Crowding of the teeth can also be caused by this condition.

In addition to the damage that impacted teeth can cause to adjacent teeth and bone, or the development of cysts or abscesses, there can be other serious problems associated with impacted teeth as well.

Symptoms – When to Remove Your Wisdom Tooth

  • A headache or a localized pain at the site of the budding wisdom tooth
  • Swelling of the jaw
  • Bleeding or swollen gums
  • Strange taste in the mouth
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck or stiff jaw
  • Teeth appear sideways or tipped

To alleviate discomfort and prevent future problems, wisdom teeth can be extracted.

Before extraction, The Dental Room will give you antibiotics if you have developed an abscess or infection.

About The Procedure

For those who require it, we provide a local anesthetic and oral conscious sedation.

A wisdom tooth removal typically takes one to two hours and is a simple procedure. In most cases, a painkiller will be prescribed to ensure your comfort during the first few days after extraction. A folded gauze pad will be applied over the extraction site and replacement pads will be provided.
