Dental implants are a great way to replace missing teeth, as well as provide a solution to people who have removable partials or completes dentures as a way to replace their missing teeth. These dental appliances are incredibly stable and provide excellent support when attached to dental implants.
In the field of dentistry, dental implants are artificial roots and teeth (usually titanium) that are surgically implanted into the upper or lower jaw bone by a dentist or Periodontist, who is a specialist in the gums and bones that support the teeth. A patient’s smile is often enhanced or restored by the teeth attached to implants, which are very natural looking.
Implants are extremely strong, stable, and durable and will last for many years, but due to normal wear, they may need to be re-tightened or replaced.
Dental implants are recommended for the following reasons:
In order to receive implants, a number of appointments are required over the course of several months.
To determine bone, gum tissue, and spacing available for an implant, radiographs and impressions (molds) are taken of the jaw and teeth. The implant will be surgically placed into the bone while the area is numb. It will then be allowed to heal and integrate itself into the bone for a period of six months. There may be a need for a second surgery to place the “post” that will hold the artificial tooth in place, depending on the type of implant. Posts and anchors are attached to other implants at the time of placement.
The artificial teeth are made and attached to the post portion of the anchor after several weeks of healing. There may be a need for several fittings to be made, so this step may take one to two months to complete. The artificial teeth are securely attached to the implant after a healing period, providing excellent stability and comfort to the patient.
When your treatment is complete, you will receive instructions regarding your care. You can prolong the life of your new implant by maintaining good oral hygiene, eating habits, and visiting your dentist on a regular basis.
