Brushing your teeth might seem like a trivial task, but there is so much more to oral health than most of us realize. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, can be linked with other chronic diseases such as diabetes. Regular dental check-ups and a consistent oral hygiene routine can prevent the progression of these diseases or at least identify signs of them early on. Our team at The Dental Room have put together a few recommendations on how to go about your daily oral hygiene routine!

Brush Your Teeth

Brushing your teeth at least twice a day will help remove food and plaque buildup containing harmful bacteria from your smile! We recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush as they are easier on your enamel and gums. Hard-bristled brushes could potentially cause gum loss and discomfort. Brush using gentle circles in the front and behind your teeth for at least two minutes at a time while holding your brush at a 45-degree angle!

Don’t Forget To Floss

Flossing at least once a day (more if you wear traditional braces) is an important step in your oral hygiene routine. Adding flossing to your daily routine will help remove plaque and bacteria in hard-to-reach places that your toothbrush can’t reach. Slide your floss between your teeth, and wrap it in a “C” shape around it two to three times. Remember to be gentle around your gumline to prevent gum loss!

Routine Dental Checkups

We recommend visiting your dentist for a routine dental checkup every six months! During these visits, a dental hygienist will remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and gum lines, polish your teeth, and examine your mouth for any abnormalities. Your dentist will be able to help clean plaque that may have been missed at home during your normal oral hygiene routine, and spot any problems early on! X-Rays may also be scheduled to get a more thorough examination of potential decay or, for young children, erupting teeth.

Maintain Healthy Habits

It’s important to avoid smoking and stick to a well-balanced diet to maintain optimal oral health. Sugar is one of the main sources of dental problems and without the right nutrients, your teeth and gums can become more susceptible to decay and disease. We understand it’s hard to resist a delicious piece of chocolate– just remember to brush after sweets!

Contact Our Team!

Dr. Kirpaul Chattha and our staff of friendly dental professionals provide routine teeth cleanings, as well as cosmetic dentistry services, in downtown Calgary. Contact The Dental Room today or give us a call at (403) 269-5411 to book an appointment.

Brushing your teeth might seem like a trivial task, but there is so much more to oral health than most of us realize.
