Anterior Teeth:<\/strong>\u00a0The upper and lower six front teeth on each arch.<\/p> Appliance:<\/strong>\u00a0Any orthodontic device which moves or retains teeth. \u00a0Appliances may also alter the positioning of the jaw.<\/p> Arch:<\/strong>\u00a0The entire upper or lower jaw.<\/p> Archwire:<\/strong>\u00a0The metal wire that connects orthodontic brackets.\u00a0 This wire guides the teeth into their new alignment.<\/p> Band with bracket:<\/strong>\u00a0Metal bands (rings) that are generally cemented around the back teeth.<\/p> Braces:<\/strong>\u00a0Fixed orthodontic appliances designed to align teeth.<\/p> Brackets:<\/strong>\u00a0The tiny metal, ceramic or clear brackets that are affixed to each individual tooth on the arch.<\/p> Brushing:<\/strong>\u00a0This is a crucial part of home dental care.\u00a0 Orthodontists recommend those wearing braces to brush after every meal and snack to eliminate bacteria and plaque.<\/p> Buccal:<\/strong>\u00a0The outer (cheek) side of posterior teeth in the lower and upper arches.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t Cephalometric Radiograph:<\/strong> A side x-ray of the face and head used to show growth and development.\u00a0<\/p> Chain:<\/strong>\u00a0Elastics connected together and placed around the brackets to stabilize the archwire and gently close spaces.<\/p> Class I Malocclusion:<\/strong>\u00a0Molars are correctly aligned, but there is an anterior\/posterior crossbite, an openbite or overcrowding on the arches.<\/p> Class II Malocclusion:<\/strong>\u00a0Also known as an overbite.\u00a0 The upper front teeth are positioned further forward than the lower teeth.<\/p> Class III Malocclusion:<\/strong>\u00a0Also known as an underbite.\u00a0 The lower front teeth are positioned further forward than the upper front teeth.<\/p> Closed Bite:<\/strong>\u00a0The upper front teeth completely overlap the bottom teeth causing a deep overbite.<\/p> Congenitally Missing Teeth:<\/strong>\u00a0Some permanent teeth fail to develop and erupt due to genetic factors.<\/p> Crossbite:<\/strong>\u00a0A malocclusion in which the upper back teeth bite inside or outside the lower back teeth, or the lower front teeth bite in front of the upper front teeth.<\/p> De-banding:<\/strong>\u00a0The removal of orthodontic bands from the teeth.<\/p> De-bonding:<\/strong>\u00a0The removal of affixed orthodontic brackets from the teeth.<\/p> Diagnostic Records:<\/strong>\u00a0Records used to assess, plan and implement treatments.\u00a0 These records usually include medical and dental history, radiographs, panoramic radiographs, bite molds and intraoral\/extraoral photographs.<\/p> Digital Radiograph:<\/strong>\u00a0Digital x-rays of the teeth which can be viewed, stored and transmitted via computer.<\/p> Elastics:<\/strong>\u00a0Some braces may require that elastic rubber bands be attached to exert additional pressure to an individual tooth or a group of teeth.<\/p> Eruption:<\/strong>\u00a0The way in which teeth surface through the gums inside the mouth.<\/p> Fixed Orthodontic Appliances:<\/strong>\u00a0Orthodontic appliances which are affixed to the teeth by the orthodontist and cannot be removed by the patient.<\/p> Flossing:<\/strong>\u00a0An essential part of home care that removes debris and plaque from above and below the gumline.<\/p> Functional Appliances:<\/strong>\u00a0Orthodontic appliances that use the muscle movement created by swallowing, eating and speaking to gently move and align the teeth and jaws.<\/p> Gingiva:<\/strong>\u00a0The gums and soft tissue around the teeth.<\/p> Headgear:<\/strong>\u00a0A removable appliance comprised of a brace and external archwire.\u00a0 This device modifies growth and promotes tooth movement.<\/p> Impressions:<\/strong>\u00a0Teeth impressions are taken to allow the orthodontist to see exactly how a patient\u2019s teeth fit together.<\/p> Interceptive Treatment:<\/strong>\u00a0Treatment performed on children who have a mixture of adult and baby teeth.\u00a0 Early treatment can help reduce the need for major orthodontic treatment in the future.<\/p> Invisalign\u00ae<\/sup>:<\/strong>\u00a0A newer, removable type of dental aligner that is completely transparent and doesn\u2019t interfere with eating because it\u2019s removable.\u00a0 Not all patients are candidates for Invisalign\u00ae<\/sup>.<\/p> Ligating Modules:<\/strong>\u00a0An elastic donut-shaped ring which helps secure the archwire to the bracket.<\/p> Ligation:<\/strong>\u00a0Securing the archwire to the brackets.<\/p> Lingual Side:<\/strong>\u00a0The side of the teeth (in both arches) that is closest to the tongue.<\/p> Malocclusion:<\/strong>\u00a0Literally means \u201cbad bite\u201d in Latin, and refers to teeth that do not fit together correctly.<\/p> Mandible:<\/strong>\u00a0The lower jaw.<\/p> Maxilla:<\/strong>\u00a0The upper jaw.<\/p> Mouthguard:<\/strong>\u00a0A removable plastic or rubber device that protects teeth and braces from sporting injuries.<\/p> Open Bite:<\/strong>\u00a0Upper and lower teeth fail to make contact with each other. \u00a0This malocclusion is generally classified as anterior or posterior.<\/p> Orthodontics:<\/strong>\u00a0The unique branch of dentistry concerned with diagnosing, preventing and correcting malocclusions and jaw irregularities.<\/p> Orthodontist:<\/strong>\u00a0A dental specialist who prevents, diagnoses and treats jaw irregularities and malocclusions.\u00a0 Orthodontists must complete two or three additional years of college after dental school and complete a residency program.<\/p> Palatal Expander:<\/strong>\u00a0A removable or fixed device designed to expand the palate in order create room on either the upper or lower arch.<\/p> Panoramic Radiograph:<\/strong>\u00a0An extraoral (external) x-ray that shows the teeth and jaws.<\/p> Plaque:<\/strong>\u00a0The sticky film of saliva, food particles and bacteria that contributes to gum disease and tooth decay.<\/p> Posterior Teeth:<\/strong>\u00a0Back teeth.<\/p> Removable Appliance:<\/strong>\u00a0An orthodontic brace or device that can be removed at will by the patient. \u00a0It must be worn for the designated amount of time each day to be effective.<\/p> Separators:<\/strong>\u00a0A wire loop or elastic ring placed between the teeth to create room for the subsequent placement of bands or orthodontic appliance.<\/p> Space Maintainer:<\/strong>\u00a0A fixed appliance used to hold space for permanent (adult) tooth.\u00a0 This is usually used when a baby tooth has been lost earlier than anticipated.<\/p> Wax:<\/strong>\u00a0Orthodontic relief wax is a home care remedy used to alleviate irritations caused by braces.<\/p> Wires:<\/strong>\u00a0Attached to the brackets to gently move the teeth into proper
