Dental veneers are very thin pieces of durable, tooth-shaped porcelain that are custom-made (for shape and color) by a professional dental laboratory.  The veneers are bonded to the front of the teeth in order to give them a beautiful and appealing appearance.

A veneer can completely reshape your teeth and give your smile a completely new look.  In many cases, they are a viable alternative to crowns and an ideal treatment option.

Like most dental restorations, veneers are not permanent and may require replacement at some point in the future.  Despite their durability, they will last for many years, giving you a beautiful smile for a very long time.

Reasons for porcelain veneers:

  • Creating a smile that is uniform, white, and beautiful from a cosmetic perspective.
  • Teeth that are crooked.
  • Misshapen teeth.
  • Severely discolored or stained teeth.
  • Tooth sizes that are too small or too large.
  • Unwanted or uneven spaces.
  • Worn or chipped teeth.

What does getting porcelain veneers involve?

It usually takes two visits to complete the process of getting veneers, and little or no anesthesia is required during the procedure.  As part of the preparation process, the teeth are lightly buffed and shaped to allow for the thickness of the veneer.  After a mold or impression of the teeth is taken, a shade (color) will be chosen by the dentist and you together based on the impression or mold.

As part of the second visit, the teeth will be cleaned with special liquids in order to achieve a durable bond between the teeth and gums.  After placing bonding cement between the tooth and veneer, a special light beam is used to harden and set the bond.

The care instructions for veneers will be provided to you.  It is very important to brush, floss and visit your dentist regularly to ensure that your new porcelain veneers last as long as possible.
